Remember Fireman Sam? The animated series with Sam the protagonist promptly attending to 911 calls of fire victims and ultimately saving the day! While it might sound simplistic and cliched, fire safety shouldn’t be taken lightly.

The Red Cross defines fire safety as ‘’a set of principles which aim to reduce the amount of damage and injuries caused by fires. These include a risk assessment to help identify and reduce areas of fire risk and formulate an emergency and evacuation plan if a fire does break out’’.

Continue reading as we learn five easy to imbibe fire safety tips you should consider having in your organisation or home.

1. Fire Extinguisher: If you have one, do you know how to use it? If you do, also ensure every employee in your organisation and every adult in your home not only knows the location of the fire extinguisher but also knows how to use it. Go further by frequently checking the expiry date too.

2. Since fire extinguishers can only contain a small fire, in the event of a large-scale fire, it is best to evacuate the building with your employees or family and immediately call the fire service for assistance. Remember, never go back into the building for anything until you have been advised by the firer service that it is safe to!

3. Ever heard of the phrase: Stop, Drop, and Roll? If you haven’t, it is usually used in the event of a fire incident. Here’s what it entails. If your clothing is on fire, use this basic movement to save your life. Don’t run out of panic. Stop where you are, drop to the ground, cover your face with your hands, and then roll over several times. Doing this will smoothen the flames and save you from getting severe burns. If you do get burns, cool them with water.

4. Install Fire Alarm system and smoke detectors: It is usually best to install a smoke alarm on every floor of your office or home. Smoke alarms are the best early fire warning system. Don’t stop there! Go further by testing the functionality of the system every week and having maintainance checks and servicing done by an approved fire engineer or contractor

5. Have an Emergency Evacuation/Escape Plan: While we do not look forward to fire incidents, it is best to be prepared by identifying and planning your fire escape route. Let your employees or family members know what these routes are and why it is important to have unobstructed exits and passages. Practice your escape plan with them at least twice a year. If you work or live in a building with multiple floors and there’s a fire, use the stairs and avoid the elevator.
