Mental health is a positive concept that relates to the social and emotional wellbeing of individuals and communities. Therefore, being mentally healthy or having good mental health is not just the absence of illness, it is a state of overall wellbeing.
The importance of mental health and wellbeing became more pronounced during the Covid-19 lockdown which swept the world in 2020 and witnessed some of the lengthiest restrictions of human movement.
To stay healthy and give our best at the workplace, we need to pay attention to our mental health and well-being. The following are some action steps to get you started.
1. Be Active and Always Eat Nutritious Meals. We can never overemphasize this point enough. Keep in mind that our physical and mental health are interconnected. So stay active by engaging in exercises even as you daily consume nutritious healthy meals.
2. Sleep Well, Rest Well. Getting at least 7-8 hours of sleep comes with massive benefits to your body. Tired from a long day at work or some strenuous activity? Take a rest! Do so and your body will be much better for it.
3. Learn to Manage Stress. Often referred to as the silent killer, stress not only takes its toll on your body, it unleashes devastating effects on your mental health if left unchecked. So take time to relax and unwind when the need arises.
4. Connect with Others and Learn to Build Meaningful Relationships. This could be at the workplace or anywhere else. Have you noticed that connecting with others, especially positive people, can be therapeutic? It builds you up and keeps you strong.
5. Need Help? Reach out as soon as you can. No man is an island, and we all have our ‘swing moments’. Talk to a therapist, family member, friend, or health practitioner when you feel the need to. It sure goes a long way!
6. Enjoy a Work-Life Balance. What’s life without one? It is important to balance life by taking time out to enjoy the things you love, especially those things that calm you and leave you feeling refreshed. Remember you only live once (YOLO).
7. Give to Others. Doing this not only helps you connect with other people, it creates a positive feeling and gives you a sense of purpose. Giving shouldn’t be all about monetary rewards only, it could also be small acts of kindness towards others or even volunteering your time at your local community.
