In every work environment, there are potential hazards that can lead to workplace injuries. So whether you work with heavy machinery, at a desk, or in the field, this article is for you!

A safe workplace provides the right aura for employees of an organisation to thrive, put their best foot forward, and help the organisation meet its goals. Therefore, providing a safe workplace should be the priority of every organisation. This is so because if someone gets injured at work, the costs can be serious and widespread. Who bears the costs? The organisation of course!

Here are five ways you can ensure workplace safety in your organisation in 2024.

1. Promptly report any Unsafe Conditions that You Notice.

Since little drops of water make a mighty ocean, it is important to not take lightly visible signs of potential hazards. If you cannot fix it, immediately notify the department in charge.

2. Take Regular Breaks Where Necessary.

Have you noticed that taking intermittent breaks during working hours is beneficial to your body? These breaks could be a couple of minutes walk around your facility or for stretch before returning to your desk. Do this at intervals, and you’ll notice that your level of concentration would be much better.

3. Keep Abreast of New Safety Procedures.

Organisations can sometimes arrange training for employees to update them on new safety procedures. This keeps everyone in the loop of things safety-wise and helps reduce the frequency of accidents. More so, as an employee, it is best to ask questions if you don’t fully understand the safety procedure or information.

4. Always wear the necessary safety equipment or gear.

Ensure you regularly do this especially if you’re working in a construction site or industrial setting. Safety gear in the workplace includes non-slip shoes, industrial work wear, fire-retardant clothing, and reflective gear.

5. Ensure your workspace is clutter-free.

There are several benefits of having a clutter-free workspace. Aside from aesthetics, it keeps you and your co-workers' miles away from potential hazards or dangers. It also ensures you don’t trip or fall over objects that are strewn all over the place.

6. Properly Use Tools, Equipment and Machinery.

The rule of thumb here is to only operate machines or tools that you are trained and competent to use. If you aren’t trained to use it, hands off! Avoid attempting to lift or move heavy items by yourself. Save yourself from strain and injury by using either a forklift or wheelbarrow to help you move heavy objects around.

7. Do not circumvent the Process.

With health and safety, there are no shortcuts! Safety and shortcuts have no nexus whatsoever. Wear safety gear, when necessary, carefully read labels and use tools and machines according to instructions.
